Inspiring the Next Generation Through STEM
The future of our industry rests in the hands of today’s young people and we’re passionate about sparking their curiosity, creativity, and ambition. Through direct engagement with schools and education providers, we show that construction is far more than hard hats and blueprints. It’s a dynamic world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) that shapes the places where we live, work, and play.
Our dedicated Public Liaison Officer, Cath, an accredited STEM Ambassador leads this mission. She builds strong partnerships with local schools and creates opportunities for pupils to experience real-world engineering challenges. From classroom workshops to on-site learning, Cath and the team design activities that don’t just educate, they inspire, opening young minds to the possibilities of STEM careers.
Across our projects, we’ve brought STEM to life in creative, hands-on ways. Here are just a few highlights:
Mumbles Coastal Defence – “Sea Through Time”
In partnership with eight local schools, we blended history, science, and environmental engineering into a unique learning journey. Pupils explored the Mumbles Coastal Flood Defence Project through coastal walks, classroom sessions, digital illustration workshops, and direct engagement with our team. We created a vibrant, comic book style story featuring Dilwyn the Sea Monster and his grandpa Gruffydd, taking children on an engaging journey that highlighted the importance of protecting their coastline while introducing them to our work and its impact.
Cardiff Sustainable Transport Project
While developing a new cycleway in Cardiff, we turned construction into a platform for creativity, learning, and environmental awareness. Partnering with local primary schools, we explored sustainable travel, climate-friendly infrastructure, and the basics of engineering safe, future-ready transport links.
Working with a professional illustrator, pupils transformed their ideas into bold infographic panels, displayed around our project site. These panels told the story of the cycleway through the pupils’ eyes, showcasing what they had learned and their vision for a cleaner, greener Cardiff.
Renewable Energy- Llwyncelyn Wind Farm
At Llwyncelyn Wind Farm, we introduced Windymena, the lonely wind turbine, whose story brings renewable energy to life. From her perch on a Welsh hillside, Windymena discovers her vital role in powering the local community and protecting the planet. Her tale became the foundation for our bespoke Renewable Energy Educational Pack, delivered to schools across Rhondda Cynon Taff. This resource combines storytelling, hands-on activities, and model-building to teach pupils about sustainability, climate change, and the science behind clean energy, empowering them to imagine and shape a greener future.
For us, STEM education is more than an initiative, it’s an investment in the innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders of tomorrow. By connecting young people with the fascinating, vital work we do, we aim to inspire change, strengthen communities, and leave a legacy that goes far beyond our projects.
